What is the Italian Golden Visa?

First launched in 2017, the Italian Golden Visa program aims to attract foreign investors, entrepreneurs, and high-net-worth individuals to contribute to Italy's job creation and economic growth.

The Italian Golden Visa - officially known as the Investor Visa for Italy - is a residence-by-investment program that grants non-EU citizens and their families the right to reside in Italy, in exchange for making a qualifying investment in the country’s economy.

Can buying property in Italy grant residency?

If you are looking to reside in Italy, purchasing property alone will not automatically grant residency. However, property ownership can be a significant factor in obtaining a residency permit. Italy offers the "Elective Residency Visa" for non-EU citizens who can demonstrate substantial financial means to support themselves, without working in Italy.

While owning property can strengthen your application, it must be accompanied by proof of sufficient income or savings, health insurance, and a stable financial situation.

This Elective Residency Visa is more popular with retirees or those with passive income sources.

The Italian Golden Visa program doesn’t currently have an option for investors purchasing direct real estate, so the most popular way to qualify for the program is by making a €500,000 investment into a limited company, we cover each investment type in more detail below.

What are the benefits of the Italian Golden Visa?

Residency Rights in Italy

Successful applicants, and their families, are granted renewable residence permits which would allow them to live, work, or study in Italy for two years - with the possibility of renewal.

Visa-free travel in certain European countries

Holders of the Italian Golden Visa can enjoy visa-free travel within the Schengen Area, which is made up of 26 European countries, for stays of up to 90 days within any 180 days.

These visa-free locations cover 80.4% of worldwide GDP and 90.9% of worldwide travel. These visa-free locations cover 80.4% of worldwide GDP and 90.9% of worldwide travel.

Family Reunification

The Italian Golden Visa extends to the investor’s spouse and any dependent parents, or children under the age of 18. This provides the opportunity for family reunification in Europe.

Healthcare and Education Access in Italy

Residency permit holders are entitled to access Italy’s public healthcare system and enroll their children in Italian schools.

A Pathway to Italian Citizenship

While the Italian Golden Visa program does not directly lead to citizenship, it may pave the way for permanent residency and eventual citizenship through naturalization. Subject to meeting residency and integration requirements.
